The Pelion Summer Lab is based in the former primary school of Makrinitsa. This historic stone building was in use as a school until 2009. Local students now attend school in neighboring Portaria. With the support of some generous families, the old school has been renovated and made available for cultural and educational activities.
The two-floor building hosts a full-equipped seminar room that can seat 80 people, as well as a classroom (the former nursery school) and a rudimentary kitchen. The building is light-filled and delightfully cool in the summer, fronted by a stone-flagged courtyard with plenty of places to sit, read, write, talk and enjoy the stunning view down to Makrinitsa. We also screen films there in the evenings. Directly behind the school is a historic church with its own courtyard.
The cobblestone path from the square down to the school is quite steep and, at points, slippery because of the smoothness of the stones. Please bring comfortable and sturdy footwear with you.
