Who can apply?
MA students, doctoral candidates and recent PhDs in relevant fields (anthropology, history, literature, sociology, interdisciplinary arts, cultural, gender and new media studies), as well as artists, activists and cultural producers, are invited to apply to the Pelion Summer Lab. In exceptional cases, we will consider qualified, advanced undergraduates and recent BA graduates.
We are seeking participants who clearly demonstrate their reasons for wanting to attend the particular PSL and can point to a prior history of research, collaboration, creative experimentation and public intervention. |
How much will PSL cost me?
The Pelion Summer Lab is a quixotic and non-profit labor of love. There is no tuition for our 10-day program.
However, participants will be required to cover the cost of their personal expenses (travel to Makrinitsa, food and lodging) and a registration fee of 150E (payable to the non-profit "Cosmopolitik: Network for Social Research and Public Action").

What does the registration fee cover?
The registration fee covers
- basic operating costs of the PSL (such as printing, cleaning, gas, PSL swag, tech)
- a hot vegetarian lunch that will be served every day we are based at the school, along with coffee/tea and light snacks/fruit
- cost of the bus for our excursion to the beach
- incidental expenses for the public experiment designed by the cohort
ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS?
If you are a student in the OSUN network, you can apply for funding to attend PSL through the Experimental Humanities Collaborative Network. Many students in the past have also applied for travel/summer funds through their home universities with success (we will of course provide you any necessary documentation).
Last year, we were able to offer scholarships to several students and are seeking funding (and cutting corners) in the hopes of doing so again this year. We are also hosting a fundraising dance party in Volos on March 15 toward this end.

What are my accommodation options in Makrinitsa?
Participants have two options
- Book accommodation with the help of the PSL team at a local hotel such as the Melanthi (or analogous) at ~30 € for a shared room; ~50 € for a single room per night, including full breakfast. The cost for the 10-day stay in Makrinitsa through PSL is 300 € in a double room, 500 € in a single room.
- Arrange accommodation on your own in Makrinitsa or in Volos. Transport by bus from Volos to Makrinitsa is available, but not frequent. We do not recommend staying in Volos if you do not have access to a car.
How do I get around in Makrinitsa?
Exclusively by foot. Makrinitsa is a mountain village traversed by an extensive network of historic cobblestone pathways. Cars and motorized vehicles are mostly not allowed, adding to the village’s beauty and otherworldliness. Unfortunately, due to the unique topography of the village, applicants with limited mobility will have difficulties with access. Please contact us for any clarifications.
Will I get a record of my participation?
Definitely. A couple weeks after the end of the lab, a certificate of attendance will be sent to you. The issuance of the certificate is dependent on regular attendance of the lab activities and participation in the public experiment on the final day. If you need this document immediately after finishing the program, just let us know.
