Ec/o/ntologiesTHEME

Strange Weather: Ecologies of Resistance and RepairThe 5th PSL on the theme of Ec/o/ntologies took place June 28-July 8, 2023, in Makrinitsa.
PSL 2023 explored how debates, methods, and epistemologies informing the emergent interdisciplinary field of Environmental Humanities might help confront and retool collective responses to the dire planetary exigencies of the mounting climate crisis. A central contention of ec/o/ntologies is that the ongoing collapse of human-planetary relations has made the bracketing of natural history from human history, the distinction between life and nonlife, nature and culture, increasingly untenable politically, intellectually and on the level of everyday existence. In addition to seminars and workshops, a 3-day public symposium was organized in the context of the 2023 Pelion Summer Lab. Under the title of “Strange Weather: Ecologies of Resistance and Repair”, the symposium unfolded in three locations (Volos on June 30th, Makrinitsa on July 1, and Stagiates on July 2) and attempted to create a space of exchange and encounter through participatory activities and multimodal formats (assemblies, documentary screening, collective audition of podcasts). As per custom, PSL 5 culminated in Makrinitsa with a final public experiment designed and created by the cohort: soundwalks in the village, called Echo/locations. PSL 5 was made possible with the support of the Experimental Humanities Collaborative Network (ECHN). The following seminars and workshops were held by PSL 2023 faculty:

EXPERIMENT |
Echo/locations: Soundwalks in MakrinitsaThe experiment for PSL 2023, a soundwalk, was presented publicly on Friday July 7, 2023 in Makrinitsa at an event entitled "Echo/locations: Soundwalks in Makrinitsa".
This year's PSL experiment was produced through a 3-day workshop, entitled Ec[h]/o/ntologies, which was led by Ismini Gatou in collaboration with Anthrobombing. PSL 2023 participants collectively explored fragments of the ec[h]/o/ontological relationships they were experiencing in Makrinitsa and Pelion and produced a multimedia walk through the village. Based on a research-creation methodology - a fusion of research, theory and art - the participants focused on sound presences (human and non-human), stories, voices, noises, silent absences, planetary enunciations, geological rumblings, the sounds of survival. They attempted to store some "imprints" of all these emotional encounters, using walking and recording, not as ways of extending the field or capturing and extracting something from the field, but as technologies related to and done-with- field. The experiment resulted in a collaboratively constructed sound-based narrative; a local multimedia-walk in the village of Makrinitsa, through which the cohort explored what happens when sounds and stories move with us (and vice versa). The soundwalks created through the workshops were five: For the needs of the experiment we used the Echoes app, where the experiment is open and accessible to everyone. Instructions: To be able to experience the soundwalk you will first need to download the application on your mobile phone and be in the area of Makrinitsa. Each individual soundwalk is digitally captured in the application inside a bubble. So, once (in Makrinitsa and) in the application you will see that the soundwalk route is surrounded by a bubble, inside which only our experiment can be heard. |
