Effrosyni Rantou

During my B.A. (Panteion University, Athens) and my M.A. (The New School, New York) in Social Anthropology my research focus was on different aspects of migration and borders in Greece, humanitarian aid as a state of exception and alternative forms of citizenship. Currently, in my PhD (York University, Toronto) research I am focusing on subterranean politics, vertical and horizontal material dynamics and formation of political subjectivities. Particularly, I am interested in tracking the cross-scale relations between the disconnected subterranean politics with the politics and notions of everyday life by looking at the ways mines and other subterranean sites operate as vibrant political borders and maps through which systems of power redistribute sociopolitical tensions at local, national and international levels.
